Ramadan

Ramadan, is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar. During the period, Muslims will worship their faith through the act of studying the Quran, prayers, fasting and performing charitable acts. It is considered as such because it is the month during which the Prophet Muhammad received initial revelations of the Al-Quran, Islam’s holy book which acts as a guidance to people.

During this month, devoted believers fast from sunrise to sunset, as per the guidance of the Islam religion as an act of devotion and dedication to God. The act of fasting is the third principle under the Five Pillars of Islam. Many believers will take the opportunity to do voluntary offerings such as Sadaqah and food sharing with those who are less fortunate than themselves.

Iftar, is the act of breaking the fast. The meal is taken just after the call to the Maghrib prayer which is around sunset. Traditionally, 3 dates are eaten to break the fast, in emulation to the Prophet Muhammad, who broke his in this manner.

Technically, Ramadan begins and ends with the appearance of the new moon. Revelation of Quran, takes place on the 17th day of the month of Ramadan. The event is known as Nuzul Al-Quran.

Ramadan finishes on the eve of May 2nd, 2022, with Eid al-Fitr.  Eid al-Fitr is celebrated in different ways, traditionally with wearing new clothes, making and sharing food and gifts. In reflection to completing the deed during Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated throughout the entire month of Syawal.

Experiencing the month of Ramadan is a time for all to share the teaching of blessings and to show thanks to others with kindness, tolerance and spiritual growth. While welcoming the most awaited month is surely exciting, it is also important to always practice safety measures. BLM wishing you a safe and Happy Ramadan!
